What is wave picking?

Wave picking is an order-picking method that releases a group of orders, a wave, to the floor together so a picker collects items for many orders in one trip through the warehouse. Grouping by location, carrier, or priority cuts the walking distance per order and raises picks per hour.

Definition

Pick many orders in one pass, not one at a time.

In the simplest method, discrete picking, a worker walks the building start to finish for a single order, then does it again for the next. Wave picking instead releases a batch of orders together and plans one efficient route that collects everything in the wave, so the walking is shared across many orders.

How it works

From order pool to packed shipment.

A wave moves through a predictable loop. The WMS decides what goes in the wave, sequences it, directs the pick, then hands off to pack.

Selection
The system pools eligible orders and groups them by a rule: same carrier, same zone, same cutoff, or highest priority first.
Release and pathing
The wave is released to workers with an optimized travel sequence so no one backtracks across the building.
Pick and sort
Workers scan each unit to verify it, then units are sorted to their orders for packing and shipping.
When to use it

Where wave picking pays off, and where it does not.

Wave picking shines under volume and ship-by pressure. At very low volume the coordination overhead can outweigh the travel savings.

High order volume
The more orders share a route, the more travel time you save. Waves pay off most during peaks and carrier cutoffs.
Many small orders
When orders are a few lines each, batching them into a wave avoids one full walk per tiny order.
Tight ship-by windows
Grouping by carrier cutoff lets you clear everything that must leave on a given truck as one coordinated push.

What the system has to do for waves to work.

Wave picking is only as good as the software planning it. The WMS has to allocate stock, sequence travel, and keep the inventory ledger correct as units move.

Allocation
Stock is reserved against each order in the wave before release, so two waves never fight over the same units.
Scan verification
Each pick is scan-checked against the expected SKU and quantity so the wrong item never reaches the pack bench.
Live counts
Every pick writes back to the ledger immediately, so available quantity stays accurate across concurrent waves.
